Overview:
There are stock risers, and then there’s what Garwey Dual has experienced over the past three months. Dual moved from Houston (George Bush High School) to Indiana last year, and came off the bench at times for one of the best high school teams in Indiana (Carmel). By season’s end Dual had yet to receive his first Division 1 offer.
That all changed this spring — and it changed in a hurry. Two weeks into the spring AAU season, Dual became one of the most talked about players in Indiana. The 6’5 lead guard was getting downhill on everyone and those who have seen him play have raved about his defensive upside.
By mid-June he had gone from all but un-recruited to everyone’s top 100 list. He’s ranked 73rd in the class of 2023 by 247 Sports, 82nd on Rivals, and 44th on On3.com.
What makes Dual’s ride even more unlikely is the fact that his AAU team (George Hill All-Indy) is not part of a Nike, Under Armour, or Adidas circuit where coaches flood to see the best players in the country go head-to-head. Regardless, G3 All-Indy is still considered a top 25 AAU team in the country.
What his team does have is immense talent. Dual has exploded this spring, as has his teammate Xavier Booker, a 6’10 lefty out of Indianapolis who is now considered one of the top 5-10 players in the class of 2023. Booker rose from #91 in the class of 2023 to #4 in 247 Sports’ most recent rankings. Both Booker and Dual were invited to the Pangos All American Camp, where Booker was named MVP in the 120 player field. Both Dual and Booker will play in the Pangos Premier 80 Showcase in California in early June.
Dual was one of 35 players invited to try out for Team USA’s U17 team that will play in the World Cup in Spain this July.
Dual visited Providence over the past week, and On3.com is reporting that a commitment could be imminent.
If Dual does commit to PC it will be a testament to how strongly he feels about Providence and Ed Cooley. Last week’s visit was his first official visit, and his profile figures to only grow over the next month and a half of summer play.
He was offered early by Arizona State and Dayton, and others likes TCU, NC State, DePaul, and (most recently) Butler offered him scholarships, but Dual has been quoted as saying his connection with the Providence staff was immediate.
It certainly doesn’t hurt matters that Cooley and Co. can point to the play of lengthy guards like Kris Dunn, David Duke Jr., and Al Durham during their tenures at Providence.
Dual freezes defenders with slick crossover dribbles and explodes past them with a very quick first step for a player his size (see the video below against The Family and watch #3). He finishes going left or right. Dual looks to have the physical tools to be a terrific defender.
What They’re Saying About Garwey Dual
In May, Rivals was one of the first national publications to introduce the country to Dual. “Dual is most definitely going to keep racking up the offers, but Dayton seems to be a school that is doing a great job recruiting early in this one. His game is a work in progress, but he shows some great flashes and will benefit from going to a school that focuses on his development,” they wrote at the time.
247 Sports’ Eric Bossi also wrote about him in May, noting, “Headed into the spring, you had to be one serious hoops junkie to know anything about Garwey Dual. Amazing what a month can change as Dual is now one of the hottest names in the class of 2023… Long and athletic, Dual has proven to be a problem off the dribble for anybody trying to stay in front of him. He's still got room to get better there and as a jump shooter but his physical tools are big time so we are talking about a guy with a lot of upside.”
“I just want to guard the best player," Dual told Bossi. "Whoever the best player is on the other team, I want him. I feel like I can get to the rim off the dribble against almost anybody.”

The footage below shows George Hill All-Indy against EYBL powerhouses like The Family and NJ Scholars (with five-star prospects DJ Wagner and Mackenzie MgBako). Dual is featured prominently against The Family, a club out of Detroit that always produces great talent.
In Summary:
It’s hard not to be excited at the possibility of Providence landing a prospect with the physical tools and upside of Garwey Dual. He has gotten to the rim at will this summer, and looks to have good finishing ability. Like many prospects at this stage, how high Dual’s ceiling ultimately is will hinge on the development of his jump shot and physical strength. He’s reportedly an active and willing defender who has had as many as seven deflections in a postseason game.
Providence is creating considerable young depth in the backcourt. Dual would bring length and versatility to that group.
An exciting time in Friartown!
