Clifton Moore vs. VCU

Moore showed a little bit of everything against one of the top teams in the A-10.

For those of you who started following this site once the regular season started, throughout last summer we had a series of videos that showed the games of Al Durham and Justin Minaya after they signed with Providence. The intent was to get Friar fans familiar with the games of the incoming transfers by showing video of their previous stints at Indiana and South Carolina.

I plan on doing the same throughout this spring and summer with PC’s latest signees.

Here’s the disclaimer I’ll add to each of these articles throughout the offseason: These videos are not meant to be purely highlights. They will certainly highlight what each of these players does well, but I will try to include every possession I watch to balance the excitement of a signing, while setting realistic expectations.

In other words, you’ll see the good, bad, and everything in-between.

The series starts tonight with our first look at Clifton Moore. Since Moore committed, I’ve watched three of his games (VCU, Richmond and Holy Cross) and have been really impressed with his skill set at 6’10. He puts the ball on the deck, is comfortable playing with his back to the basket, and flashes really good passing ability. He looks capable of being both the lone big on the floor, or playing alongside Ed Croswell.

Moore is a fluid athlete with long arms.

It has been quite the journey for Moore to get to this point. After not seeing much playing time in two seasons at Indiana, he transferred to La Salle (he grew up about 15 miles north of Philly) and sat out a year. He dislocated his ankle prior to the beginning of his first year of eligibility at La Salle, so he really didn’t get to show what he could do until this past season.

Moore put up 12.9 points, 6.1 rebounds, and blocked nearly three shots per game in 2021-22. His offensive game really took off in A-10 play last year.

Tonight, we take a look at Moore against VCU on Jan. 8.

VCU was one of the best teams in the league last season, finishing 14-4 in conference play. The Rams lost to Richmond in the A-10 tourney, then won a game in the NIT (vs. Princeton) before falling to Wake Forest in the second round.

La Salle was in a tough spot heading into this one. They were down two starters and were shaking off the rust that came from their previous two games being postponed.

Moore’s game was just starting to take off a this time. In La Salle’s previous game, he went for a career-high 26 points against Fordham. Versus VCU, he grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds, to go along with 21 points. He also had three blocks and three assists.

You’ll see plenty of versatility from Moore in this video. He finished a left handed hook shot, faced up and drove to the lane from the top of the key, completed a pair of and-1s, and showed a decent touch from midrange and the free throw line.

La Salle trailed 22-6 early, and kept it around a 10-15 point contest for much of the game, before faltering late. They trailed 38-28 at the half, and cut the lead to single digits on a few occasions early in the second half, but never truly threatened.

Still, Moore was very impressive in this game, as you will see.

Final Stat Line: 8-12 from the field, 5-7 from the free throw line, 21 points, 12 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 blocks, 0 turnovers in 35 minutes.

VCU won 85-66.
