Devin the Dude: Explosive South Carolina Transfer Guard Devin Carter Found a Home in Providence
Devin Carter gets to the free throw line.
A lot.
The numbers of the Miami, Florida native and All-SEC Freshman performer won’t immediately jump out at you. As a freshman he scored 9.0 points and grabbed 3.8 rebounds per game, while shooting 42% from the field and 26.7% from three. He did all that in just 18.7 minutes per game.
But then there were the free throws — oh so many free throws.
Carter drew 94 fouls in 564 minutes played as a freshman at South Carolina last season. That number would have placed him third on Providence, behind Al Durham (134 fouls drawn) and Nate Watson (99).
Here’s the thing though, Durham drew 134 fouls in 1023 minutes played. Watson’s 99 came in 901 minutes.
Carter’s 6.6 fouls drawn per 40 minutes was good for 18th in the country last season. The rest of the top 20 is mainly filled with big men.
Getting downhill and creating contact is a big part of Carter’s appeal. The 6’3 guard also showed he can get after it defensively a big under Frank Martin.
