Drew Fielder, who has seen his stock take off this summer, to visit Providence in September

A look at Fielder's big performance on ESPN this week, how his recruitment is shaping up, and a player comparison

Drew Fielder cemented his status as one of the biggest risers in the class of 2023 while playing on ESPN in the Big Time Tournament against the Compton Magic earlier this week.

Fielder, and his West Coast Elite team, took home a narrow 65-60 victory over the favored Magic, thanks in large part to a handful of clutch plays by the Providence recruit over the final five minutes of the game.

Providence offered Fielder a scholarship this summer after seeing him on the Under Armour Circuit. He is a Boise, ID native who will spend his senior season at SoCal Academy in California, playing alongside 2023 PC pledge Garwey Dual. Fielder missed six months last year with a back injury, but returned to the court in May and has looked terrific in June and July.

The 6’10 Fielder has range well beyond the 3-point arc, is a good passer from the high post, and owns a crafty post game with above average footwork. His game is reminiscent of Tyler Cavanaugh, who shined for the Albany City Rocks on the EYBL Circuit before heading to Wake Forest. Cavanaugh transferred from Wake after his sophomore year (PC showed interest at the time) and wrapped up his career with two very productive seasons at George Washington. He spent a few years in the NBA and is now playing professionally in Lithuania.

Fielder took home the MVP award in the Big Time Tournament after scoring 15 points. He buried a pair of deep catch and shoot threes in the first half, but made his most significant mark down the stretch with six points over the final 4:45 of the game. Each of those buckets came when it was still a one possession game.

Fielder’s best highlight may have been when he threw a wrap-around bounce pass in transition to lead his teammate to the rim for a layup with three minutes to go in what was a 57-53 game at the time.

There was plenty of big-time talent on the floor when West Coast Elite and the Compton Magic met. Fielder is teammates with Vyctorius Miller, a top 20 player in the class of 2024, while the Compton Magic had four players in the top 150 of their respective classes, including the impressive 2023 center Devin Williams and Koa Peat, the 2nd ranked prospect in the class of 2025, according to ESPN.

It was announced this week that Fielder will visit Providence in September, and he is looking to schedule a visit to USC as well. Both Miami and Boston College offered him scholarships this week.
