Episode 3 of our podseries on the 2003-04 Friars is live
Jim Calhoun's infamous rant (and what it meant for Ryan Gomes' status nationally), the Friars storming through league play, and what ultimately led to their season-ending losing streak to close 2004
Heading into March 2004, Providence was 20-5 and ranked #12 in the country. This team very realistically could have been 22-3, if not for buzzer-beating losses in back-to-back games against Texas and Rutgers.
Providence won 12 of its previous 14 games heading into March, with a pair of six-game winning streaks wrapped around a two-game skid in early February.
Those wins included:
A big bounce back at Seton Hall (a tournament team in ’04) after the Texas and Rutgers losses
A sweep of Villanova highlighted by a 100-74 blowout of the Wildcats on the road
Running past defending national champion Syracuse at the Dunk
Snapping a long losing streak at Notre Dame
Putting up 103 points at the Garden against St. John’s
And, of course, taking out #4 UConn on the road, which led to Jim Calhoun’s tirade about PC superstar Ryan Gomes
We go through all of these games with the players and staff, and then turn our attention to the four-game losing streak that closed out the season.
Listeners will enjoy hearing about the highs of this season, and reflections on where things went wrong after they were looking so great.
