Friar Basketball Newsletter: A look at the non-conference schedule, the magical run of 1972-73, what's next for Kris Dunn, big man recruit Patrick Wessler, and more
Providence released its non-conference schedule last week, highlighted by home games against Texas Tech and URI, as well as a road trip to Wisconsin, and a potential neutral court matchup with Virginia. We took at look at every game on the non-conference slate, including Ed Cooley’s record against each opponent, how the Friars have fared versus these programs all-time, as well as who each team has coming back in 2021-22. There’s some video added for good measure, including highlights from PC’s win at Virginia in 2004.
Craig Leighton continues his series, “Reflections of a Lifelong Friar Fan,” with a look back at the magical, pivotal season of 1972-73. The Providence Civic Center opened that year, and the Friars reached the Final Four behind Marvin and Ernie D.
Kris Dunn is on the move again, as the Boston Celtics dealt him to Memphis in a multi-player deal. The trade won’t be official until later this month, but this could be a make-or-break season for the former Providence All American. In this article, we take a look through the many obstacles Dunn has faced since shining at Providence, and what is ahead in Memphis.
North Carolina center Patrick Wessler will visit Providence officially on Sept. 10. Craig wrote about Wessler’s game, as well as the terrific Combine Academy team he will play for this season. The 7’0 Wessler is a member of the class of 2022 and has a final list of schools that includes Providence, Ole Miss, Virginia Tech, NC State, and USC.
