Friar Basketball Newsletter: A Roundtable with PC Greats, Connecting with Fans Via Twitter Spaces, and Recruiting Season Hits Full Swing
The offseason is upon us, but there’s little time to rest for anyone involved with Providence’s basketball program. The transfer portal is wide open, coaches were allowed to evaluate high school prospects in person this week, and roster building news should be coming fast and furious over the next month.
This week’s newsletter includes two different recruiting features, the launch of a new, interactive way to hear the voice of Friar fans, an hour-long roundtable with some of PC’s all-time greats reflecting on the history of the program, and a highlight reel of a beloved Friar.
This past week brought the news that Justin Minaya would bypass his final year of eligibility to pursue his future in professional basketball. What an impact Minaya made in just one season in Providence. His guile, toughness, maturity, and cerebral approach to the game made him a wildly popular figure in Friartown. Highlights of his season can be seen here.
News also broke of the transfer of redshirt freshman Matteus Case, and the de-commitment of 2022 center signee Christ Essandoko. Case was brought in to provide shooting punch, but was used sparingly last season, while Essandoko was a longer-term project with upside.
Subscribers can read about how a furious, critical recruiting season is upon us, and also see more on Kentucky transfer Bryce Hopkins, who the Friars pursued heavily when he was a high school prospect in Chicago.
Finally, there are a pair of conversations that I think Friar fans will really enjoy. Early last week, Billy Ricci and I hosted a Twitter Spaces conversation with about 40 PC fans in which we talked about all things Providence basketball (running down the 2022 class, upcoming recruiting, Final Four thoughts, etc.). Billy and I really enjoyed hearing from those of you who joined, and we look forward to hosting another Space soon (possibly as early as this week). A recording of that conversation (68 minutes) can be found here.
I was also thrilled to be invited to join a panel hosted by Providence College professor Sean Holley to speak about the history of Providence basketball. Sean was able to gather a really insightful group of Friar greats, including Ernie DiGregorio, Dickey Simpkins, Rob Phelps, Ruben Garces, and Jason Murdock, as they spoke about their experiences at Providence College. This conversation runs about 50 minutes and can be seen here.
We have also heard from about 600 of you who have taken our year-end survey. Responses are still trickling in, so I’ll give it a few more days and write an article on those topics for next week’s newsletter.
This week could be an active one for the Friars, and I look forward to writing about the latest happenings in Friartown.
I can’t tell you how much I love your articles. I wish we could have followed this closely in the 70’s.
