Friar Basketball Newsletter: Corey Floyd Jr. is the latest transfer to pop for Providence
In a span of nine days, Providence has completely reshaped its roster through the transfer portal. Any doubt about whether or not Ed Cooley and his staff would be able to capitalize on a terrific 2021-22 season has now vanished, as the Friars added a trio of highly regarded guards and a versatile big man this spring.
The latest Providence commitment is certainly an interesting one. Corey Floyd Jr. announced via his social media channels on Sunday afternoon that he will be a Friar. If Floyd’s name sounds familiar, it should. His father (Corey Floyd Sr.) played for Providence in the early 1990s, while Corey Jr. spent the past season at UConn. He enrolled early at Connecticut this past season and redshirted, but left the program before ever playing a minute for Dan Hurley.
Floyd Jr. comes from a winning pedigree. The New Jersey native and top 100 recruit in the class of 2021, played for national power Roselle Catholic, and was one of the top players on perhaps the best AAU team in the country last summer.
You can read more about Floyd – including first-hand accounts of his game, what this means for the UConn/Providence rivalry, and how he fits into a remodeled Providence roster.
As we did last season with Al Durham and Justin Minaya, we will post video reels of Providence’s incoming transfers. While some of these clips will be traditional highlight reels (like this one from 2018 when Noah Horchler and North Florida went up against Florida freshman turned PC transfer Noah Locke), most of these videos will be intended to show you a majority of the possessions each player had in certain games. The intent is to demonstrate an incoming transfer’s strengths, while not setting an unnecessarily high bar by including some missed shots and turnovers as well.
This week you can see a really impressive performance from La Salle transfer Clifton Moore against VCU (21 points, 12 rebounds, 3 blocks, 3 assists), and South Carolina transfer Devin Carter showing his offensive game with 21 points against Georgia. Moore, Carter, Locke, and Floyd Jr. will be eligible to play next season.
Our News and Notes column this week examines just how rare it is for a player to make as many threes and shoot them with such efficiency as Noah Locke has over the past four years. It also includes information on another potential Friar target, the transfer of Brycen Goodine, a New England prep to keep an eye on, and more on Clifton Moore’s development.
Lastly, you can expect a conversation with Clifton Moore to be posted on the Friar Podcast early this week. Keep an eye out for that one.
