Friar Basketball Newsletter: Devin Carter Goes Off in Summer League, Transfer Tapes of Daquan Davis and Cole Hargrove, Eric Murdock Time
🔥 Devin Carter Delivers in Summer League
Devin Carter delivered one of the best performances of the NBA Summer League on Saturday, scoring 30 points on 10-13 shooting from the field and 5-7 beyond the arc in the Kings’ 109-92 victory over Chicago. Carter added eight rebounds, three steals, and three assists in 29 minutes.
It’s been an interesting summer for Carter, the 13th pick in the 2024 NBA Draft. After playing just 11 minutes per game in his rookie season, Carter was the subject of trade rumors in June.
He’ll play with the ball in his hands a lot next year, and after struggling through a 2-14 shooting night in the Summer League opener, Carter was dominant on Saturday.
🎥 Going Back to the Transfer Tapes
Daquan Davis enters his second collegiate season with an opportunity to provide a level of tenacity on the defensive end, as well as some scoring punch for Providence, after transferring in from Florida State.
Davis had a statistically productive, if not efficient, freshman season at FSU — scoring 8.8 points to go along with 2.5 assists per game on 36% shooting from the floor, 82% at the free throw line, and 27% from deep.
While he scored 18 points against Syracuse and 19 versus Western Carolina, his best statistical night came against Miami:
9 points
10 assists
3 rebounds
Just 1 turnover in 25 minutes (third career start)
He showed real playmaking ability, though Miami’s defense—ranked 339th nationally by KenPom—left plenty to be desired. Still, here’s a look at Davis in an 80–65 win.
🐉 Cole Hargrove: Underrated Addition
While he won’t come in with the fanfare of a few of his teammates, there’s a lot to like about what Cole Hargrove will bring to Providence from Drexel. The transfer big man is just solid — good size, mobile, hits the glass in traffic, with some passing upside.
Hargrove was excellent in the CAA quarterfinals vs. Elon last March—a 91–74 win where Drexel raced out to a big halftime lead and held off a second-half push. He finished with:
19 points
10 rebounds (6 offensive)
2 blocks
He hit three hook shots in the second half, and showed a soft touch at the free throw line. He also switched out on guards and held his own defensively.
Friars to Play Pittsburgh in Exhibition Series
Earlier this month, Providence announced it will play Pittsburgh in an exhibition series the next two seasons. PC will play at Pitt on Sunday, Oct. 19 and the Panthers will travel to Providence in 2026.
Pitt finished 17-15 last year and 8-12 in the ACC.
