Friar Basketball Newsletter: Early impressions of Legend Geeter, what's behind Noah Horchler's importance, reflections on PC's downturn at the end of the 1970s, episode two of our 2004 pod, and more
We are less than a month away from the start of the 2021-22 college basketball season, and a little over a week from Providence returning to the Dunk for an exhibition game against Stonehill (Oct. 21).
In this week’s newsletter we take a look at a critical piece for the upcoming season in Noah Horchler, and a potential building block in freshman Legend Geeter.
Horchler came on very strong over the final nine games of the 2020-21 season, averaging 11.3 points and 7.5 rebounds, while shooting 44% from 3-point range during that span. Subscribers can hear the staff’s perspective on Horchler, and read more about the changes Horchler had to make as he adjusted to a new role and league last year.
Geeter has impressed the staff with his court awareness and maturity. Subscribers can read about Geeter’s journey to Providence College, including how he handled some obstacles along the way, while also reading more about how he’ll need to develop to be an impact player at PC.
The second episode of our podcast series on the 2003-04 Friars is now available. We really enjoyed this look back at some big games from the non-conference portion of the schedule, highlighted by outstanding games against Illinois and Texas.
Craig Leighton has written in great detail about Providence’s rise to an Eastern basketball power in the 1960s and ’70s. The program stumbled upon hard times starting in 1978-79, as PC prepared to enter the Big East.
Craig also wrote about the National Prep School Invitational returning to Providence in February after a year away. This is an outstanding event that annually features future NBA talent and college basketball stars.
AJ Reeves is reportedly down 20 pounds heading into his senior season. We’ll have more on AJ as the regular season approaches, but for now, here is a look back at his junior year.
Finally, Friar fans can also see highlights of a pair of impressive performances by newcomer Al Durham from his days at Indiana. Here he is putting up big numbers against Michigan and Nebraska.
