Friar Basketball Newsletter: Friars kick off the 2021-22 season, Nate Watson steps into a leadership role, finding rhythm for AJ Reeves, and a look at the week ahead
For the first time in nearly two years, Providence officially returns to the Dunkin Donuts Center this week. The Friars kick off their season with a pair of games against Fairfield and Sacred Heart. Get ready for the season’s kickoff with this article and read all about these matchups and a big road trip for a fellow Big East team this week.
Speaking of the last time PC played at the Dunk, here’s a look back at that night, when the Friars had it all clicking against DePaul.
Providence will rely heavily on super senior Nate Watson this season. Watson will be asked to not only fill the stat sheet during his final run at PC, but take on a leadership role. Subscribers can read about Watson’s terrific offensive numbers from a season ago, but also how he is developing into a leader for the Friars. As assistant coach Bob Walsh shared earlier this fall, “His approach rubs off on a lot of guys, and honestly, his approach makes the coaches smile. He makes Ed Cooley laugh and smile and appreciate what he gets to do every day. Nate’s just got a positive attitude and an energetic approach to every day that makes a big difference for us.”
One of PC’s true strengths will be the amount of experience they have returning. One of those veterans is senior guard AJ Reeves, who is down 20 pounds heading into the season. Here’s a look at Reeves and the importance of getting him into attack mode.
Finally, as we head into the new season, Providence fans shared their thoughts on a variety of topics in our preseason fan survey. The results and additional thoughts on the survey can be seen in this article.
We’re really looking forward to covering the Friars once again this year. We hope you have enjoyed our transition to this new model so far. Thank you, as always, for reading.
