Friar Basketball Newsletter: Noah Locke's Career Day, Bryce Hopkins and the Big East POY Chase at the Midway Point, Kayvaun Mulready at the TD Garden, Episode 3 of the 2014 Podcast Series
We’ve got what I believe is a newsletter featuring a variety of unique content this week, with reaction to Providence’s win over DePaul, impressions from seeing Friar commit Kayvaun Mulready take on Brewster Academy at the TD Garden, as well as the release of the third episode of our podcast series on the 2013-14 Big East Tournament champions.
Let’s start with Mulready and his Worcester Academy team. On Saturday night the recent Providence commit in the class of 2024 played a big role in a matchup of perhaps the two best prep teams in New England this season.
Brewster Academy is loaded, and includes a few players that Mulready will encounter in the Big East. Their star player is UConn commit Solomon Ball, and they also start a Xavier pledge in the sharpshooting Reid Ducharme. Brewster’s frontcourt is loaded with Tennessee signee JP Estrella and future Penn State big man Carey Booth, with wings like four star Wake Forest commit Aaron Clark and Florida State’s Taylor Bowen rounding out their roster.
Mulready was more than up for the challenge, scoring 18 points as Worcester surged out to a ten-point lead in the second half before faltering late.
From the article (which is available to subscribers):
In the first half, he had two pretty assists to Norman, finished a strong and-1 through the Tennessee-bound Estrella, and would have had a second and-1, but his teammate was called for an offensive goaltend on a layup that was surely about to go down.
Mulready is terrific in transition and went the length of the floor for this finish with under a minute left in the first half.
We are also excited to share the third episode of our podcast series on the 2013-14 Friars. Bryce Cotton, Ed Cooley, Kadeem Batts, Carson Desrosiers, Ted Bancroft, and LaDontae Henton all gave terrific insight on the games that took place down the stretch of that season — and the first two contests in the Big East Tournament.
You can hear all about the double overtime game against Villanova at the Dunkin Donuts Center, a wild Senior Night victory over Marquette, facing Doug McDermott in his final home game at Creighton, and how Josh Fortune caught fire at MSG. Here are a few excerpts from the pod:
Alright, so we touched on the future and reflected on the past — how about the present?
Providence improved to 7-2 in Big East play on Saturday behind a career-high 29 points from Noah Locke. While Locke was the star on Saturday, we also take a look back on how essential he was in victories over Connecticut, St. John’s, and URI.
“He knows exactly why he’s here and he continues to get better and better,” Ed Cooley said of Locke following Saturday’s win.
Highlights from Saturday’s win can be seen here.
The Friars also got a 20 point, 11 rebound double double from Bryce Hopkins. While there are 11 conference games remaining on Providence’s schedule, Hopkins has certainly positioned himself as one of maybe three or four players who have a legitimate case for Big East Player of the Year at the midway point of conference play. This article takes a closer look at Hopkins’ outstanding season to date, as well as breaking down the performances of other top players in the league.
Providence plays twice this week. First comes an 8:30pm tip on Wednesday night at home against Butler, followed by a Sunday afternoon game at Villanova.
We appreciate your support of Friar Basketball and look forward to another big week ahead!
