Friar Basketball Newsletter: Providence Gets a Commitment from Four Star Prospect Garwey Dual, Al Durham Reflects on His Outstanding Season at PC
Providence received terrific news this weekend from 6’5 Garwey Dual, a four star prospect out of Indiana, who committed to the Friars.
Dual is a Houston native who transferred to Carmel High School in Indiana last year (one of the top programs in the state), and did not have a Division 1 offer by the end of the season. The 2023 guard exploded playing for George Hill All-Indy this spring, however, and vaulted his way from relative unknown into the top 100 rankings of 247 Sports, Rivals, and On3.com.
He visited Providence last week (his first visit) and announced his commitment to PC on Sunday. Dual is Providence’s first commitment in the class of 2023, and continues the tremendous recruiting roll the staff has been on since the end of the season.
We have three articles on Dual in this week’s newsletter, including a Closer Look article that documents his journey from Houston to Indiana to one of the fastest rising prospects in the country.
Subscribers can read a breakdown of a game against Purdue commitment Braden Smith, who was named Indiana’s Mr. Basketball last season. This article includes numbers of how Smith shot when being covered by Dual, as well as impressions of Dual’s offensive game from a tightly-contested game in January. The article includes highlights and a video of the entire game.
We also dig a little more into Dual’s game, his tryout for Team USA’s U17 team, and how Providence is stockpiling good, young guards.
Finally, Billy Ricci of The Friar Podcast recently spoke with Al Durham, who was effusive in his praise of his entire Providence experience. “I can’t tell you how blessed I am to (have) come to Providence and just experience this,” Durham told the Friar Podcast. The episode is one of the best Billy has hosted over the past two years.
