Impressions of Garwey Dual vs. Indiana's Mr. Basketball Braden Smith
In early January, Garwel Dual and his Carmel High School team traveled to take on Westfield High and eventual Indiana Mr. Basketball Braden Smith.
Carmel has been one of the most dominant high school programs in Indiana, most recently winning state titles in 2019 and 2021. They may have won the 2020 championship as well had the tournament not been cut short due to the pandemic. Carmel’s seniors were 16-0 in postseason play before losing to Westfield in the sectionals this March (59-54).
Two months prior, Carmel and Westfield battled through a hotly-contested game that came down to the final possession. I watched that early January game last night to see how Garwel Dual matched up against Smith, the six foot scoring guard who is headed to Purdue next year.
Smith scored 28 points in Westfield’s 43-42 victory over Carmel in January. But how did he fare when going up against the length and athleticism of Dual?
