National Prep School Invitational Back Up and Running on Sunday with Barry Wang, Kur Teng, and George Turkson
The 23rd annual National Prep School Invitational (NPSI) hit quite a snag when the power went out after blisteringly cold and windy weather ripped through New England on Friday night.
The power outage took place during what was one of the headline games of the four-day tournament, as Bradford Christian Academy (with class of 2024 stars Kur Teng and George Turkson) met Worcester Academy in a rematch of last year’s NEPSAC AA championship game.
Even prior to the power outage on Friday, bad luck hit NPSI when both Providence commit Kayvaun Mulready and Marquette pledge Tre Norman were sidelined for Worcester Academy.
The game was called prior to halftime, and unfortunately, all of Saturday’s games were cancelled as well as Murray Gymnasium at Rhode Island College remained without electricity until late Saturday night.
Billy Ricci and I were able to catch up with Mulready after the game on Friday, however.
Earlier in the day on Friday, NBA Global Academy, featuring class of 2023 forward Junjie “Barry” Wang, took a 77-66 decision over Covenant College Prep of New Jersey. Wang scored eights points in that game, knocking down threes from the top of the key and the corner.
NBA Global got an 18-point performance from the physically impressive Yaak Yaak, a 6’10 center in the class of 2023.
I had seen Wang play once before, via a stream when PC commits Garwey Dual and Drew Fielder’s Southern California Academy team pulled out a 48-45 victory over NBA Global in the final minute. Wang had a mere cameo in that game, but this weekend in Rhode Island brought a much longer look at the forward who visited PC in January.
