News and Notes: The latest episode of the Friar Podcast, comparing Providence's NCAA Tournament resume to past seasons, tracking the transfer portal, conference records in the tourney, and more
1. Bill and I recorded the latest episode of The Friar Podcast on Sunday, and we shared our thoughts on the end of PC’s season, the roster going forward, what to look for on the transfer portal, the Big East teams in the NCAA Tournament, Devin Carter’s draft stock, most intriguing players heading into next season, and more.
You can hear it at Soundcloud, Apple, or wherever else you listen to your podcasts.
2. Subscribers to Friar Basketball can see a breakdown of every player in the transfer portal that Providence has reportedly reached out to — including highlights, shot charts, and stats of each player. We will continue to update this transfer portal page throughout the offseason.
3. While the success of a season at Providence is often dictated by whether or not the Friars reach the NCAA Tournament, the 2023-24 Friars actually compared favorably to past PC teams from a quality win perspective since the NET replaced the RPI prior to the 2018-19 season.
For instance, Providence’s six Quad 1 victories are the second most the program has had since the shift to the NET (the 2019-20 Friars went 7-8 against Q1 opponents). Here are the Friars’ Quad 1 records over the past six seasons:
2018-19: 4-8
2019-20: 7-8
2020-21: 4-7
2021-22: 5-3
2022-23: 4-8
2023-24: 6-9
Of course, Providence had 15 chances at Q1 victories this year, tying the most Quad 1 games they have played in a season since the NET was introduced.
Their average NET win of 157 was just the fifth best mark for a Friar team over the past six seasons, as their 11 Quad 4 games didn’t help their resume. PC had only played 11 Q4 games in a season once (2022-23), and had never played more than six of them prior to last year.
Below is a breakdown of all Providence teams by overall record, Quads 1-4 marks, average NET wins and losses, and their final NET over the past six years:
