Good news continues to come for Providence fans this spring. The Friars’ latest addition comes in the form of 6’8, 235 pound Duncan Powell, a versatile, well-traveled forward who averaged 12.2 points and 5.4 rebounds, while shooting 35% from three for a Georgia Tech club that finished 17-17 last season.

A one-time Arkansas commit in high school, Powell changed course and went to North Carolina A&T, where he redshirted his freshman year before playing a year there. Powell went from NC A&T to Sacramento State, where he averaged over 12 points and seven boards.

Providence was still in the market for a starting four man after talented Alvaro Folgueiras decided on Iowa (over PC and Villanova) over the weekend. All Friar fans had the same thought when Powell decommitted from Georgetown over the weekend — then Powell to Providence became reality on Monday afternoon.

While the Friars could potentially add another big man to their frontcourt, the bulk of their work this offseason is complete. Powell figures to slot in as the starting four man, joining a spring haul that includes a very good portal class of Jason Edwards (Vanderbilt), Jaylin Sellers (UCF), Daquan Davis (Florida State), Cole Hargrove (Drexel), along with freshman-to-be Stefan Vaaks (Estonia).

On paper, it’s a group filled with a lot of talent. Next, we’ll see how they fit together.

The one thing Providence added this spring are some big personalities, specifically in Edwards and Powell. The Friars lacked players with outward energy and emotion a year ago. That shouldn’t be the case next season.

Breaking Down Duncan Powell:

At 6’8, 235 pounds, Powell has the size typical of a four in today’s college game. He’s a capable outside shooter who does his best work off the catch. Just about half his field goal attempts came from deep (48%) and he ranked in the 77th percentile nationally as a spot up shooter and 70th on catch and shoot jumpers. Over 40% of his possessions came on spot up attempts.

Conversely, he shot 3-16 on jump shots off the dribble. A large majority of his jumpers came from beyond the arc (147 of 160 possessions).
