The Season in Review: Friars take apart Northwestern, then fall to UVA in Newark before returning home to take on the unlikeliest Elite Eight team in history
From Nate Watson's dunk to Jared Bynum's injury and Noah Horchler having a near-perfect night, we look back at a busy week last November.
Who would have guessed that the best team that Providence would play the week of Nov. 22 would hail from the MAAC?
The Friars were off to a 4-0 start to the 2021-22 season when they headed to Newark to take part in the Legends Classic with Northwestern, Virginia, and Georgia.
This tournament was a bit of a consolation prize for PC fans, as Providence was originally scheduled to play in the Empire Classic at Madison Square Garden — with a field that included Gonzaga, Louisville, and Oklahoma State.
When that tournament was cancelled, PC pivoted and took to the court in a relatively empty Prudential Center to take on Northwestern on a Monday night.
Providence’s 77-72 win was largely remembered for two things by season’s end: Brycen Goodine getting hot from deep and Nate Watson throwing down the dunk of the year, but those weren’t the only reasons why this game was significant.
