Weekly Highlights: Providence Comes Out On Top vs. Georgetown, Falls at MSG

Providence started this week #20 in the AP Poll, and split a pair of games with Georgetown and at St. John’s.

Georgetown Notes:

  • The victory over the Hoyas improved PC to 18-6 on the season and 10-3 in the Big East.

  • The win gave Ed Cooley his 10th conference win for the eighth time in 12 seasons at Providence. Prior to his arrival in 2011, the Friars won 10 Big East games in three seasons since reaching the Elite 8 in 1997. They had done so seven times since the Big East started in 1979, prior to 2011.

  • Bryce Hopkins had 17 points, six rebounds, and four assists, while Devin Carter went for 12 points, nine rebounds, and seven assists. Carter threw down a loud alley oop on a pretty pass from Jayden Pierre in the first half, before returning the favor on a transition lob to Hopkins in the second.

  • Providence went on a 16-1 run in the first half and led 39-30 at the break.

  • PC led by as many as 17, before taking a 74-62 win.

  • Georgetown did not make a 3-pointer in the second half (0-9).

  • PC improved to 13-0 at home this season.

  • Clifton Moore added eight points, six rebounds, and a pair of blocks off the bench.

  • PC shot 8-21 from 3.

St. John’s Notes:

  • PC dropped to 18-7 overall and 10-4 in the Big East with a 73-68 loss to St. John’s at Madison Square Garden.

  • Bryce Hopkins scored 19 of his game high 29 points in the second half. He also added nine boards.

  • The Friars trailed 25-9 in the first half before surging back to cut the Johnnies advantage to 37-35 at the break.

  • St. John’s went on a mini 6-0 run to push their head to 62-52, and Providence would not get the game back to one possession the rest of the way.

  • The Johnnies were 0-9 from three in the second half, so PC’s two opponents this week shot a combined 0-17 from three after halftime.

  • Despite getting 20 offensive rebounds, PC finished with just 68 points, thanks to poor shooting from the floor — 33% from the field, 30% from deep, 40% in the paint.

  • Providence’s bench contributed just four points in the loss.
