Friar Basketball Newsletter: Adding context to the Garwey Dual commitment, Devin Carter vs. JD Davison, Clifton Moore's passing, and a looking back at the huge win over Texas Tech
In this week’s newsletter, we provide additional context around Providence’s recruitment of Garwey Dual, who committed to PC last week. This article digs into why Dual is a fit from both a style of play and personality standpoint, and shares how the staff of one Midwestern power might already be kicking themselves for not pursuing him harder.
Our look back on the 2021-22 season this week is all about one of the most pivotal wins of the season: the Friars coming back from double figures down to take out Texas Tech. With Jared Bynum out and PC struggling to get any semblance of offense going early, Ed Croswell provided a massive lift and carried the momentum from this strong showing throughout the rest of the season. It was a win that Ed Cooley and his players later said provided them with evidence that this team could do something special.
The Boston Celtics selected J.D. Davison out of Alabama in last week’s NBA Draft. Davison and South Carolina guard-turned-Friar Devin Carter were both named to the SEC-All Freshman team last season. Here you can see highlights of the one time in which Carter and Davison took to the floor against one another last season.
Finally, one of the more undersold aspects of Clifton Moore’s game has been his ability to pass the ball. He averaged just over an assist per game, so it’s not surprising that he didn’t come to Providence with the rep of a big-time passer, but the La Salle transfer has a good overall skill set, including sharp passes out of the post, and moving it relatively quickly on the perimeter. His passing ability was on display in a game against UMass last season.
