Recruiting News: Patrick Ngongba’s stock elevates, Friars in final eight for for Daquan Davis, new names to track, and more offers come in
Session 4 of the Nike EYBL circuit took place in Memphis over the weekend. Friar Basketball takes a look at how some recent visitors to Providence’s campus fared, as well as newer names to keep an eye out for.
Patrick Ngongba’s stock explodes for Team Takeover
Patrick Ngongba was featured here in early May, as the 6’10 big man from Virginia became a priority recruit for Kim English’s staff shortly after they came to Providence. He was already considered a top 70 prospect in the country heading into last weekend, highlighted by an early EYBL session in which he shot 83% for a weekend. Providence has been so high on him because he is incredibly skilled and fundamental in the post, with range on his jumper. English offered him in early April and had him on campus in May.
Ngongba’s stock exploded further over the weekend. He averaged 16.3 points and 11.3 rebounds per game, while helping to lead Team Takeover to a 4-0 mark. The highlight was an outstanding 33-point, 18-rebound, 5-assist game against Phenom University. He shot 13-23 from the field and 5-5 at the free throw line in his breakout game. A developing shooter, Ngongba has made 8-12 from 3-point range in EYBL play this year. He was so efficient this weekend, shooting a combined 16-23 in the three other games he played in.
Ngongba will visit UConn soon, and picked up an offer from Duke after this huge weekend.
Team Takeover is atop their division in EYBL with a 14-3 record. Providence is recruiting three other players from their program in point guard Daquan Davis, and wings Isaiah Abraham and Caleb Williams.
Davis, who visited PC with Ngongba, did not play this weekend, but he did make news by announcing that he will make his college decision on June 25. He will decide between Providence, Maryland, Mississippi State, and Notre Dame. Davis’ competitive spirit is a big draw for the Friar staff.
Nate Guerengomba One to Watch
Providence has had its eye on Nate Guerengomba even before he had a big weekend in Memphis. He’s a strong, 6’4 guard who played for a terrific South Kent team last season. Guerengomba suits up for the PSA Cardinals in the summer. He had a pair of big performances on Saturday with 20 points against CP3 and 15 against NH Lightning.
The Friars are also still tracking Guerengomba’s PSA teammate Boogie Fland, a five star guard out of Archbishop Stepinac in New York. Fland has already gone for 30+ twice in EYBL play (31 vs. Mokan Elite and 31 against Houston Hoops).
Speaking of five star players in the class of 2024, Providence is monitoring New York Rens’ small forward Naas Cunningham, of Overtime Elite. Cunningham was recruited to Overtime Elite by new PC assistant coach Tim Fuller. Cunningham scored 17 points in games against All Ohio and Proskills on Saturday.
PC in the final eight for Del Jones, Offer Derrion Reid
Team Durant point guard Del Jones is down to eight schools, according to Joe Tipton of On3.com, and Providence is among the finalists.
PC is also recruiting his Team Durant teammate, Acaden Lewis, a shooting guard in the class of 2025.
The Friars offered a scholarship to Derrion Reid this week, a 6’8 wing in the class of 2024. Reid’s stock has taken off, as he was also just offered by Kansas and Creighton, as well as PC. He was named the best defender of an EYBL session for the second time this spring by Made Hoops.
Reid is putting up monster numbers in EYBL play: 17.9 points, 6.4 rebounds, 2.1 assists, 42.3% from three.
