The Friar Basketball Newsletter: Jared Bynum Returns Home and Puts on a Show, Checking in on Justin Minaya’s Defensive Numbers, Noah Horchler’s Return to School is Paying Off Big Time, and More
It’s hard to top the week Jared Bynum just had. The Providence point guard returned home and scored 27 of his career-high 32 points in a second half explosion against Georgetown on Sunday afternoon. Bynum joined some exclusive company, as he made 7-8 from three point range in a 71-52 victory over the Hoyas.
Earlier in the week, Bynum made 4-5 from distance to help lead Providence to a solid road victory against St. John’s in Queens.
With the road wins at Georgetown and St. John’s, PC is now 20-2 on the season and 10-1 in Big East play.
Here is a feature on Bynum, the Georgetown Prep graduate who is making a push for the Big East Most Improved Player award with his amazing turnaround this year. As the article details, Bynum’s numbers in conference games are sparkling.
Highlights of Bynum’s 32-point afternoon against Georgetown can be seen here. Craig Leighton also has you covered with links, tweets, and videos of interest with the Friar Starting Five recapping the win
We also have full game highlights from an exciting win over St. John’s, as well as a breakdown of that win. That article details how Justin Minaya and Al Durham are having a greater impact than the talented five-man transfer class Mike Anderson brought in to St. John’s this season. It also highlights how Nate Watson did serious damage in the second half, while Bynum and Horchler hit killer threes.
Speaking of Horchler, we delve into just how rare the combination of his three point efficiency and work on the glass has been. Horchler’s return didn’t make headlines last spring, but it’s certainly paid off for the Friars this year.
We’re always happy to dig into Justin Minaya’s defensive numbers. For instance, prior to the Georgetown game, opponents were shooting 1-12 against him in post-up opportunities and 26% when taking jumpers against him.
Finally, our News and Notes column is back after a week away. This week looks into how Providence could achieve an AP top 25 rarity for the program, as well as sharing notes on Jayden Pierre taking on a loaded team from Utah, PC’s effectiveness in getting shots at the rim, a peek at a few Big East programs, shot charts, stats, and more.
We hope you are enjoying the content as much as we have enjoyed creating it this year. What a ride it has been so far.
Keep up the great work! PRM, ‘60.
