Why Subscribe to Friar Basketball?
Since moving to Substack in July 2021, we have worked tirelessly to provide original, in-depth content to fans of Providence College basketball and the Big East.
We have published nearly 900 articles since this move. We didn’t get to that number through content aggregation; instead you will find articles and interviews that really tell the “why,” not just the “what” about all things Friars.
For instance, not long after Ed Cooley left Providence for Georgetown we met with PC Athletic Director Steve Napolillo for a feature story on all facets of Cooley’s departure and how Napolillo attacked finding his replacement.
A few months later, Billy Ricci and I hosted a 45-minute sit-down with Napolillo and new Friar head coach Kim English to discuss a wide variety of subjects regarding the current state, and future, of the program.
Friar Basketball’s partnership with Billy Ricci and The Friar Podcast has resulted in conversations like the one with English and Napolillo, as well as podcasts with countless other critical members of the Friar community — Ryan Gomes, Bryce Cotton, God Shammgod, Ben Bentil, Bob Driscoll, and so many others. More recently, we interviewed assistant coach Dennis Felton, as well as new Friars Christ Essandoko and Oswin Erhunmwunse.
As a result of this partnership, we have also hosted multi-episode podcasts series on the 2004 Friars and 2014 Big East Tournament champion Friars. Those pods included amazing insight from the coaches and players of both of those memorable seasons.
At the heart of everything we have done, since the first iteration of the site in 2009, has been an undying love of Providence basketball, and a genuine passion to tell the story of this program in such a way that readers never question just how invested we are in covering the program the right way.
Caring deeply about the program doesn’t mean blindly supporting everything that comes out of it. It means writing about it in a way that best serves the most hardcore Friar fans — watching and rewatching games and tape of incoming transfers, getting out and seeing recruits in-person or catching a dozen streams of their games a year, editing and publishing hours of highlights, and covering all of the biggest topics with pure passion.
So, why subscribe to Friar Basketball?
Despite producing what we believe is among the best Providence basketball content available, I know we can do more. I am beyond eager to produce even more Friar-related content, and with your support we will do just that. We have lofty short- and long-term goals that we can only get to with the support of Friar fans.
Since moving to Substack we have seen encouraging growth, but we have a ways to go to get to our next goal. While we will always make some of our content available for free, you can read all of our articles if you have a subscription to the site. Subscribers will get more in-depth articles and behind-the-scenes insight into the program.
We have three subscription options available for our readers:
Monthly: $7 a month
Annual: $65/year ($5.41 a month)
Founding Member: passionate supporters of the site can chose to contribute above the two options above to help us reach our ultimate goal

I can’t tell you how much I appreciate the love and support we get from our readers. If you are a longtime reader of the site who has thought about subscribing, but haven’t yet, we promise to make it worth your while. If you are a current subscriber who loves our content, please tell as many Friar fans as possible about us.
