2003-2004 Friars Podcast Series

Friar Basketball collaborated with The Friar Podcast to bring Providence fans a special look back at the 2003-04 Friars.

Why did we choose this team for our first podcast series? This was a team that featured Providence’s all-time leading scorer in Ryan Gomes, spent the final two months of the season ranked in the AP Top 25, defeated defending national champion Syracuse, eventual national champion Connecticut, and the core of an all-time great Illinois team in Madison Square Garden.

This season also featured a wild home game against Texas with Rick Barnes at the helm, Jim Calhoun’s infamous rant about Ryan Gomes, the first-ever game at the Ryan Center between PC and URI (in a blizzard), a matchup with another former Friar coach in Pete Gillen, before a stunning four-game losing streak in March after the team wrapped up February 20-5 overall. It was also, unfortunately, a team that experienced some tragedy in the years that followed this memorable season.

In this podcast series we heard candid reflections from Gomes, point guard Donnie McGrath, guard Sheiku Kabba, and center (and Los Angeles Lakers draft pick) Marcus Douthit, as well as tremendous insight from assistant coach Bob Walsh.

This is a true behind-the-scenes look at the highs, the lows, the competition, and so much more. We think diehard Friar fans will really enjoy it.
