Friar Basketball Newsletter: Big East Teams Hit the Transfer Portal, Resetting the Friar Roster, Ed Croswell Season Highlights, Latest Video of Devin Carter and Clifton Moore, and Barnes to the Rescue
We are excited about the content we have coming up here at Friar Basketball over the next couple of weeks, including a few podcasts with The Friar Podcast that we think listeners will really enjoy. Our next podcast should be out late this week, and will also be featured in our next newsletter. Keep an eye out for that pod, as it’s a good one!
In this week’s newsletter, subscribers can read a breakdown of Providence’s big men and point guards in the first of our two-part “Roster Reset” feature. This article takes a look at PC’s next crop of big men, and how they could potentially play together next season. We also examine how Providence is in an enviable position at point guard, with All Big East performer Jared Bynum returning, a terrific-looking prospect in freshman Jayden Pierre coming to campus, as well as a slew of combo guards who could fill in at the one spot in a pinch.
I’m very excited that Craig Leighton has written the next edition of his “Reflections of a Lifelong Friar Fan” series, focused on Rick Barnes’ first season at PC. For those of you who may have missed this series earlier, Craig shared his memories of following the Friars from the late 1960s through Rick Pitino’s Final Four run of 1987. His latest looks at how Barnes quickly turned things around in year one, setting Providence up for a strong run in the seasons that followed.
This week’s newsletter also includes Ed Croswell’s highlights from this past season, a breakdown of Devin Carter’s first career start at South Carolina (in which he scored 20 points against Arkansas), and Clifton Moore’s impressive all-around game against Holy Cross last December. Both the Carter and Moore articles feature video.
Finally, Providence isn’t the only Big East school making waves on the transfer market this spring. In this peek around Friartown and the Big East, we look at Creighton putting together a roster talented enough to reach the Final Four, Thad Matta rebuilding Butler’s frontcourt with size, and Patrick Ewing filling some majors holes at Georgetown. This article also includes notes on PC transfer Legend Geeter’s new landing spot, the talented David Jones heading to St. John’s, Kris Dunn’s late-season performance with Portland, and much more.
