Friar Basketball Newsletter: Legends Return for Friends of Friar Basketball Weekend, Devin Carter's Big Game vs. Ole Miss, An Upcoming Official Visit, and more
The past four days were truly special ones in Friartown thanks to the hard work and dedication of Harold Starks and the Friends of Friar Basketball. The organization coordinated a long weekend filled with activities for a massive number of former players, coaches, and influencers of Providence basketball.
The highlight was the Providence Coach's Legends Roundtable, a conversation that included PC legend Billy Donovan, current head coach Ed Cooley, and former coaches Rick Pitino, Rick Barnes, Pete Gillen, and Tim Welsh. The roundtable was hosted by Doris Burke, who was masterful in leading an outstanding ninety-minute conversation.
Impressions of the roundtable can be read here, and we also have another post that shares a number of articles and videos on this very special weekend. Everyone who took part in the roundtable seemed to be genuinely touched by their Providence experience, and by having the opportunity to reflect on it with so many of the individuals who helped build this basketball culture.
While this past weekend was a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the past, we also take a peek forward with three other articles this week.
The Friars will receive a September visit from 6’10 2023 big man Drew Fielder, who just shined on ESPN last week against top competition. Fielder is a Boise, ID native whose game is defined by his inside/out offensive versatility. Impressions and highlights of Fielder can be seen here.
We also take a more immediate look ahead with video of Devin Carter’s 16 point, 11 rebound, four assist effort at Ole Miss last February. You can read about how Carter’s boundless energy makes him such an exhausting matchup.
Providence added a proven shooter this spring in graduate transfer Noah Locke. The Maryland native is a 39% career 3-point shooter between his two stops at Florida and Louisville. Much of Locke’s scoring has been done on spot-up opportunities, and this article takes a look at the damage players like Bryce Cotton and AJ Reeves did off of screens during their Providence careers. Could Locke follow suit?
Thanks, as always, for reading Friar Basketball.
