The Friar Basketball Newsletter: The Regular Season is Here! Season Preview Podcast, Features on Jared Bynum and Ed Cooley, Results of the Fan Survey, Previewing the Week Ahead, and much more
Providence kicks off their season on Tuesday night at home against Rider and excitement couldn’t be much higher coming off an outstanding 2021-22 campaign.
Friar Basketball has all sorts of content to help get you primed for the season.
The results from our 2022-23 Preseason Fan Survey are in, and we heard feedback on a variety of topics pertaining to both Providence and the Big East. Some of the questions asked include:
Providence was predicted to come in 5th in the Big East by the league’s coaches. How do you feel about that?
Of the freshmen, who do you think will be the biggest surprise on the 2022-23 Friars?
What is your biggest concern about the 2022-23 Friars?
Which new hire do you expect to have the most success during his entire tenure in the Big East?
Aside from Providence, which team do you think has the best chance to overtake Villanova as the top program in the league following Jay Wright’s departure?
We have a pair of feature articles included in this week’s newsletter. There is an in-depth look at the massive leap Jared Bynum took last year, with specific statistics on just how deadly he was on all different types of jump shots in his second season as a Friar. For example, Bynum ranked in the 91st percentile in points per possession on jump shots, in the 95th percentile in catch and shoot, 97th on guarded jumpers last season.
Readers can also check out our piece on Ed Cooley — what last season meant for the program, its coach, and the big-time momentum the Friars are now enjoying.
Want to learn more about Providence’s two opponents this week? Our “Week Ahead” series is back, with detailed looks at both Rider and Northeastern. The article shares how Cooley is ready to turn the page on last season and focus on his latest group of Friars.
Billy Ricci has written his second piece for Friar Basketball, this week focusing on what PC basketball means to the city. Billy and I also hosted our season preview podcast last week. The podcast will be available first thing Monday morning on The Friar Podcast.
We are also excited to be in the final stages of editing for our 2013-14 podcast series. Here are a pair of clips from our interview with Ed Cooley. Cooley reflected on the dawn of the “new” Big East, and how football was “in the way.” He also shared his thoughts on just how special Bryce Cotton’s performance was against North Carolina in the 2014 NCAA Tournament.
Finally, we take one last look back at the 2021-22 season in the final article of our “Season in Review” series. This article includes details, quotes, and highlights from Providence’s postseason run of 2022.
Providence Athletics also released a terrific look back at last season on Thursday night in a documentary on the team that runs just under two hours.
To say we’re excited for the season is an understatement. We believe we have a lot of great content in store for all Friar fans this season, and appreciate everyone who supports our work. If you are enjoying what you read here, please pass it along!
